Digital Advertising Costs: Cost Components and How to Set a Daily Budget

A breakdown of digital advertising cost components and how to set a realistic daily budget, with worked examples.

"How much do Instagram or TikTok ads cost" has no single answer, because pricing runs on an auction: who else is bidding, how relevant your ad is, and what season it is. What you can calculate is the cost components.

Cost components to account for

  • Media spend: paid to the platform, an amount you set.
  • Creative production: photos, video, and copywriting.
  • Management service: a flat fee or a percentage of spend.
  • Tooling: hosting, tracking, or supporting software if used.
  • Lead handling: your team's time replying and closing sales.

Many businesses count only the first item and are surprised by the real total.

How to set a daily budget

Start from a target, not a random number:

  1. Set a monthly result target. Example: 60 leads.
  2. Estimate a cost per result your margin can absorb. Example: 50,000 IDR per lead.
  3. Multiply: 60 × 50,000 = 3,000,000 IDR of media spend per month.
  4. Divide by 30: roughly 100,000 IDR per day.
  5. Add the other components to reach your total budget.

All numbers above are illustrative calculations, not market prices. In the first month, treat part of the budget as testing cost to find the creative and audience that work.

The minimum for meaningful testing

A daily budget that is too small collects data very slowly, so decisions rest on inadequate samples. A practical rule: the daily budget should produce several results per day, not one result every few days.

When to increase budget

Increase when cost per result has stayed below your ceiling for several consecutive days. Raise gradually, for example 20 to 30 percent, then observe. Large jumps often push cost per result up because the system re-enters learning.

When to reduce or pause

Reduce when cost per result passes your ceiling and the cause is not yet identified. Pause when stock runs out, the team cannot follow up leads, or the landing page has issues.
