Meta vs TikTok vs Google Ads: When to Use Which

A practical comparison of the three main ad platforms based on buyer intent, product type, and creative requirements.

These three platforms are often compared as if one were simply better. The real difference is the intent people have when they meet your ad.

Google Ads: capturing existing intent

People type because they are searching. Good for:

  • Products or services people already know and search by name.
  • Urgent needs, such as repairs or local services.
  • Businesses serving a defined area.

What you need: a keyword list, ad copy, and a landing page matching the search. Competition on commercial keywords usually means a higher cost per click.

Meta Ads: building demand at scale

People are not searching, but the data is rich enough to find likely buyers. Good for:

  • Consumer products that benefit from visual explanation.
  • Offers that need introducing first.
  • Retargeting site visitors and past customers.

What you need: several creative angles and correct tracking.

TikTok Ads: won through video creative

Viewers come for entertainment. Good for:

  • Products that look compelling when demonstrated.
  • Younger audiences or growing markets.
  • Businesses able to produce video regularly.

What you need: a continuous video production flow, because creative fatigues fast.

Choosing without wasting budget

  • If people already search your product category by name, start with Google Ads.
  • If the product must be shown to be understood, start with Meta or TikTok.
  • On a limited budget, run one platform until cost per result stabilises, then add a second.
  • If you already have site visitors, retargeting is usually the fastest step.

Combining platforms

The most common mix: one platform to introduce the product, one to capture people already searching your name. Judge every platform by the same metric — cost per result and real business outcomes, not dashboard numbers.
