Choosing an Online Advertising Agency: Checklist, Must-Ask Questions, and Red Flags
How to evaluate an online advertising agency before signing anything, including the questions clients rarely ask.
Choosing an online advertising agency is often decided on first impressions: a tidy portfolio and big promised numbers. What actually decides long-term results is what rarely gets asked up front.
Checklist before you decide
- Account ownership: whose name the ad account is under, and whether you keep access if the engagement ends.
- Data ownership: who owns the pixel, audience lists, and reports.
- Scope: what is included and what is not, including who produces creative.
- Fee structure: flat fee, percentage of ad spend, or both, and what sits outside it.
- Reporting: format, frequency, and which metrics are reported.
- Point of contact: who you reach day to day and expected response time.
Questions worth asking
- Which metrics will judge success in the first month?
- How long is a reasonable learning period before results can be assessed?
- What is the plan if cost per result is still above target after two weeks?
- Who produces new creative, and how much per month?
- What happens to the account and data if we stop working together?
Clear, specific answers are worth more than confident-sounding ones.
Red flags
- Promising a specific result or ROAS before seeing your data.
- Refusing to give the business owner access to the ad account.
- Reports containing only impressions and clicks, with no cost per result.
- Unwillingness to explain the campaign structure in use.
- Long contracts with no mid-term review point.
Preparing yourself as a client
Even a strong agency struggles without basics in place. Before starting, prepare: a working landing page, installed tracking, clear pricing and stock, and someone who follows up leads quickly. Leads answered hours later look like ad failure when they are not.
Starting with low risk
Begin with one objective, one platform, and an agreed review period. Define up front what counts as success and what would change direction.
